We are lucky to have a new guest writer here on WTR. Daron Snyder is the Director of Operations at Roomscapes Luxury Design Center in Rockland and has been instrumental in propelling the newly-formed Rockland Revitalization Group forward. In his first piece, he talks about the group and the work they’re doing.
There are enough awesome things happening in Rockland right now to make even the hardest of hardcore cynics feel optimistic. The rail trail was finished a few weeks ago, a bunch of roads will be fixed next year, the new middle school and high school renovation looks awesome, and two new groups have been formed by Rockland residents: the Rockland Revitalization Group and the Friends of Rockland Parklands. My brain feels like it’s going to explode as I type!
Election Day’s beautiful weather brought out sign-holders en masse to the Esten School lawn Saturday. At 5:30 p.m., when my husband and I voted, it looked like Woodstock… but instead of weed and acid, there were Honey Dew bags and Dunks’ coffee cups.
At the end of the day, the town’s senior citizens, a bunch of our crappy roads, and some lucky candidates were the winners (some only barely).
There are three candidates running for Rockland Town Clerk: current Selectwoman Debbie O’Brien, current Assistant Town Clerk Randalin “Randy” Ralson, and Benjamin Nyquist. WTR asked the candidates to answer a few questions about their backgrounds and qualifications
There are two candidates for one Board of Selectmen seat this year: incumbent Larry Chaffee and challenger Mike Zupkofska. Chaffee is hoping for a ninth term while Zupkofska, a former selectman, is hoping to get back on the board. WTR asked the candidates to answer a few questions about their backgrounds and qualifications, and here are their answers.
There are two candidates for the position of town treasurer, John Ellard and Donna Shortall. Ellard has served on numerous committees in town, while Donna has worked several jobs in town government. She is currently the administrative assistant in the Treasurer’s Office.
It’s a bold move, but administrators say it would save Rockland hundreds of thousands of dollars. Starting next year, the school system’s seven phys ed teachers will be axed and replaced with Wii, the popular electronic gaming system that allows users to dance, golf, bowl, and run with the guidance of a machine.
Phew! It’s been a wild and crazy few months and sad to say, WTR has been on the short end of the stick (along with my dog).
Right after the holiday stroll, my pregnancy went from normal to high-risk. Luckily, the cute and amazing baby girl I had nine weeks ago made up for it. And now that life is taking on some sort of routine, I’m able to focus slivers of attention on things besides the baby.
And could it be better timing? Rockland’s annual town election is April 14.
[Updated at 12:20 p.m. to reflect new details from State Police.]
Rockland Town Administrator Allan Chiocca was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and speeding in Abington on Thursday night, according to State Police.
Chiocca, 57, of Bridgewater, was traveling on Rte. 58 in a 2011 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck at [...]
It’s safe to say the annual Holiday Stroll was a huge success this year. Hordes of people streaming down Union Street, great weather, and lots of fantastic things to see and do. And can I just say the balloon artist was AH-MAZING?! Bravo to Pam Murphy, Cathy Stewart, the Biggins family, and all of the [...]

This blog was started by a brother and sister, Eddie Damon and Megan McKee, who grew up in the small town of Rockland, Mass., a blue-collar suburb of Boston with about 17,500 residents. Welcome to Rockland aims to give a deeper understanding of issues facing the town, and to provide a launching point for greater community awareness and, ideally, involvement.
